About Department

The Department of Anaesthesia Technology at MIMS College of Allied Health Sciences, affiliated with the Kerala University of Health Sciences (KUHS), is committed to excellence in education, clinical training, and patient safety in the field of anaesthesia and perioperative care. The department prepares highly competent Anaesthesia Technologists through an outcome-based curriculum that combines strong academic foundations with extensive hands-on clinical experience in modern operation theatres, intensive care units, emergency departments, and other critical care settings.

The Bachelor of Science in Anaesthesia Technology is a four-year professional degree programme, comprising three years of academic and clinical training followed by a one-year compulsory rotational internship. The curriculum equips students with the knowledge and practical skills required to assist anaesthesiologists in perioperative care, critical care, trauma management, emergency services, and advanced life support while developing expertise in anaesthesia equipment, patient monitoring, airway management, and infection control.

Under the guidance of experienced anaesthesiologists, intensivists, and clinical faculty, students receive structured training across a wide range of surgical specialties and critical care environments, enabling them to develop professional competence, clinical judgment, and technical proficiency.

Specialized Clinical Training Includes:

  • General and Regional Anaesthesia
  • Airway Management and Endotracheal Intubation
  • Operation Theatre Preparation and Anaesthesia Workstation Management
  • Perioperative Patient Monitoring
  • Trauma and Emergency Care
  • Intensive Care Unit (ICU) Management
  • Mechanical Ventilation
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
  • Pain Management and Labour Analgesia
  • Anaesthesia for Basic and Super Speciality Surgeries
  • Non-Operating Room Anaesthesia (CT, MRI, Endoscopy, ESWL)
  • Infection Prevention, Sterilization, and Biomedical Waste Management

Advanced Clinical Facilities and Technologies

Students gain practical exposure to state-of-the-art anaesthesia and critical care technologies, including:

  • Modern Anaesthesia Workstations
  • Multiparameter Patient Monitoring Systems
  • Mechanical Ventilators
  • Capnography and Pulse Oximetry
  • Invasive Blood Pressure and Central Venous Pressure Monitoring
  • Neuromuscular Monitoring and BIS Monitoring
  • Video Laryngoscopes and Fibreoptic Bronchoscopes
  • Ultrasound-Guided Airway and Vascular Access Techniques
  • Emergency Resuscitation Equipment
  • Critical Care Monitoring Systems

Clinical Experience

Clinical postings form an integral component of the programme. Students undergo supervised rotations in:

  • Operation Theatres
  • Intensive Care Units (ICUs)
  • Emergency and Trauma Care Units
  • Recovery Rooms (PACU)
  • Labour Rooms
  • Cardiac Operation Theatres
  • Neurosurgical, Paediatric, Obstetric, Orthopaedic, Urology, ENT, Plastic Surgery, and General Surgery Theatres
  • Non-Operating Room Anaesthesia Services

This comprehensive clinical exposure enables students to develop confidence in patient care, anaesthesia assistance, monitoring, equipment handling, and emergency management.

Graduate Competency

Upon successful completion of the programme and compulsory rotational internship, graduates are competent to function independently as Anaesthesia Technologists. They possess the knowledge, technical expertise, and professional skills necessary to:

  • Assist anaesthesiologists during all phases of anaesthesia.
  • Prepare and maintain anaesthesia equipment and operation theatres.
  • Perform patient monitoring and assist in airway management.
  • Support critical care and mechanical ventilation.
  • Participate in emergency resuscitation and trauma care.
  • Ensure patient safety by adhering to infection prevention and quality assurance protocols.
  • Deliver compassionate, ethical, and evidence-based perioperative care.

Commitment to Excellence

The Department of Anaesthesia Technology is dedicated to fostering academic excellence, clinical competence, ethical practice, innovation, and lifelong learning. Through advanced simulation, interdisciplinary collaboration, research, and evidence-based education, we strive to produce highly skilled Anaesthesia Technologists capable of meeting the evolving demands of modern healthcare while ensuring the highest standards of patient safety and quality care.
