About Department

The Department of Microbiology at MIMS College of Allied Health Sciences is a vital academic unit dedicated to the study of microorganisms and their impact on human health.

It was established in the year 2006 under the guidance of MIMS Academy.
Since its inception, the department has played a significant role in training skilled healthcare professionals.

VISION
To be a center of excellence in microbiology education, training, and research by nurturing competent healthcare professionals with strong scientific knowledge, practical skills, and ethical values. The department envisions developing expertise in diagnostic microbiology and fostering innovation to address emerging infectious diseases and public health challenges.

It aims to develop competent professionals skilled in diagnostic microbiology and laboratory practices. The mission includes promoting research, critical thinking, and continuous learning among students. It strives to ensure high standards of biosafety, ethics, and infection control awareness.
The department seeks to contribute to improved healthcare services in alignment with the goals of Aster MIMS Academy.

OBJECTIVES

  • Theoretical Proficiency: To provide a comprehensive understanding of the morphology, physiology, and genetics of bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites, including their role in human health and disease.
  • Diagnostic Mastery: To train students in essential laboratory techniques, including specimen collection, aseptic processing, staining, biochemical identification, and automated culture methods.
  • Clinical Safety & Ethics: To instil rigorous knowledge of laboratory safety protocols, sterilization, disinfection, and biomedical waste management to ensure a secure clinical environment.
  • Antimicrobial Awareness: To develop expertise in performing and interpreting antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST), aiding in the effective treatment of infectious diseases and the monitoring of drug resistance.

Clinical Diagnostic Focus: Unlike general microbiology, these departments focus specifically on the identification of human pathogens—including bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites—directly related to patient care and disease management.

HANDS-ON TRAINING; students benefits from practical experience in well equipped laboratories and clinical settings , using sophisticated instruments and technique.

Strong Clinical Partnerships: Collaborations with Aster MIMS Hospital and external centers such as

HIGH ACDEMIC STANDARED ; Programmes are approved by the Kerala paramedical council and affiliated with Kerala University of Health Sciences, ensuring quality education.

    National Exam Success: High pass rates in DHA, MOH, and PSC exams among graduates.

    University Rankings: Consistent high rankings in MSc programs, particularly in MSc MLT MICROBIOLOGY

    Student Projects : Fourth-year BSc students and MSC students conduct projects in the department as part of their curriculum.

Laboratory Facilities

Student Laboratories: Two dedicated labs for undergraduate and postgraduate students, equipped as per the university's minimum standards.

Clinical Lab Facilities: Access to Aster MIMS Hospital for hands-on training in departments like MICROBIOLOGY, SEROLOGY ,MOLECULAR BIOLOGY.
